BA (Hons) Illustration with Animation

Brett Taylor

My work is primarily based around 'moving image'.

For the final year of the course I focused on 'stop-motion' and 'abstract moving image'. With regards to 'stop-motion' themes, I created a series of films with original sound effects that focussed on making mundane objects that can be found around the house have a life of their own and consequently; create a different scenario and atmosphere to what the objects may have originally been used for.

Unlike the 'stop motion' films, which are more direct, the 'abstract' films are denser and not necessarily based on any form of narrative. In contrast, the films are driven by the idea of trying to create a barrage of colour, shapes and movement (that nod to a 'dream-like' landscape) with as little props or equipment as possible. Combining these ideas with examples of drawn animation enabled me to create these weird, abstract sequences.
