BA (Hons) Fine Art

Caroline Whitmore

I have sought to create spaces on the canvas that are detached from the outside world. I went on to look more specifically at America as a subject matter, to reinforce the ideas of dislocation and isolation and the effect it has on perceptions of reality.
My paintings present an incomplete picture; compositions are collaged from different scenes, so that the outcome feels uncomfortable and artificial. Colour plays an important role. Using a ruductive approach, seperating areas of flat colour next to areas of detail.
I aim to show the boundary between reality and fiction which has preoccupied many artists in response to the media saturated landscape of the modern day.  Figurative painting removes itself from the temporal limitations of producing images for the moment. Looking at the contradictions within America between the manmade structures and the permanent landscapes I aim to show tensions of a fast paced modern society.
