BA (Hons) Embroidery

Chloe Hamill

Chloe’s current practice explores representations of female refugees through the visualisation of birds, playing on the connotation of the word ‘bird’ as slang for woman. Developed from working collaboratively with refugees at Rainbow Haven, each fair-trade rucksack is connected to an individual refugee; whose country of origin is also the country the bird on the bag migrates from. The rucksacks have sections that can be cut away and used to create a three-dimensional bird allowing the consumer to create a physical reminder of the refugee they have helped to support financially, as all proceeds will return to the refugee centre.
