BA (Hons) Embroidery

Conall Padraig O'Brien

My current practice is inspired by historical garments, past events and imagined future events. The work is concept driven, with in depth research into events, people and artefacts. The practical work itself is focused on construction, fabric, finishing and detailing with the aim of creating pieces with a sense of authenticity whilst being practical and believable.

This piece is inspired by Captain Scott's “Terra Nova” expedition to the South Pole in 1910-13, and other Polar expeditions during what is called the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. The work looks to the future and the possibility of major climatic change with the arrival of a new Ice Age and imagines what explorers might wear as they explore a “New North”, with much of the northern hemisphere under ice cut off from new technologies and the rest of the world.
