BA (Hons) Embroidery

Hayley Godfrey

I work in a variety of styles but typically prefer to work in a mixture of digital print, photo-montage and embroidery. Through my work I explore themes of childhood, nostalgia and how compulsive collecting and clutter can produce collections that not only reflect the owner’s tastes, but glorify objects of ‘kitsch’ iconic status within contemporary culture. I am interested in the construction of identity as a ‘work in progress’ that is constantly added to and the way in which individuals strive to display it through interior decoration. I enjoy the over-excessive nature of kitsch and its vibrant, often somewhat gaudy aesthetic which has a sense of playfulness and the tongue-in-cheek which is a central element of many of my textile pieces.
