BA (Hons) Fine Art

James Lencki

The sublime in contemporary art can be used as a way of addressing themes of transcendence, complexity and vastness that were once emphasised in religious discourse, yet are nevertheless still relevant in today’s more secularised society.

Technology however has never been more relevant, having become an indispensable aspect of our daily lives, completely changing how we communicate and address philosophical issues. David Hockney’s iPad drawings exhibited at the Royal Academy show how technology can also challenge our perception of what constitutes a work of art.

My work is an amalgamation of these two themes. My installations incorporate light emitting technology and digital sound in immersive, interactive dark spaces, whereas my prints – whilst still concentrating on notions of the sublime - engage with the role of software such as Photoshop in the art making process, blurring the boundaries between photography, print and design.
