BA (Hons) Embroidery

Laura-Jane Atkinson

Combining interests in process and colour, my practice investigates links between the disciplines of mathematics and embroidery.

As a result of this enquiry, I am exploring the notion of juxtaposition placing emphasis on colour, pattern and scale. Through an amalgamation of soft textile practices and hard materials I establish a distinct combination of visual juxtapositions based on mathematical methodologies and textile processes including screen print, hand embellishment and cutwork.

Using number patterns to reveal colour and draw reference on traditional embroidery filling stitches, I have subverted tradition to demonstrate a hybrid of control and chaos.
