BA (Hons) Fine Art

Renate Wendel

I am primarily a painter, developing an abstract style concerned with the exploration of surfaces and textures, juxtaposition and interaction of colour, shape and line as well as the qualities of paint and its application. I approach the creation of images from an abstract perspective, sometimes based on non-visual ideas such as music, sound or mood as a starting point – to reflect or meditate on it through the medium of paint. My engagement with the materiality of painting begins with developing my own paints. The written word, already an abstract visual expression, also provides a basis for more complex work. Words can be broken up into letters and letter segments to use as 2D building blocks for paintings, prints and mixed media work. My work often remains knowingly ambiguous; my intention is to engage the viewer and allow him/her to read it their own way.
