BA (Hons) Textiles

Ruby King

I have always been interested by the seemingly delicate, fragile appearance of natural structures like feathers and bone, yet the strength and power that they possess. When I read David Almond’s novel Skellig, I was fascinated by his vivid description of a decaying bird-like creature found in a dilapidated garage, who turned out to be half angel. These thoughts and ideas led me to design textiles that mirror patterns, form and structures found in nature, as well as exploring the fantastical elements of Skellig. Within my womenswear collection, I have used macrame and knitted fabrics to reflect the skeletal pattern, loose fibres to create volume as well as fringing, to suggest ethereal movement and transformation.
