BA (Hons) Photography
Sophie Stafford
My approach to photography is through documentary portraiture.
This project covers issues in the ability of a photograph and a photographer, to capture the true character of the sitter. And how we view and read images to define that person.
This project is exploring the relationship between reform and religion. The portraits are centered around a church in central manchester of people who have been in prison and found their faith, and the volunteers who work in the prisons as a councellors once they have been released from prison.
It explored the moment that they found their faith, and how that moment affected their decision to change.

Ian served 8 years in prison, and was released 9 months ago. He found his faith when he was 4 months away from being released, when he tried to commit suicide by hanging himself with his bed sheets. He felt a being to the right of him that forgave him for his sins, and took all the anger and bitterness away.
