Sophie Whiteford

My name is Sophie Whiteford and my main artistic medium is digital art and image manipulation.
Throughout my 6 years of art based education my main focus has been on illustrations to accompany short stories, media related articles or responses to personal life situations.

A lot of the time, I use this form of expression to help cope with and organise my thoughts, as many of the artists who inspire me have done. Music is also an important influence on much of my art; I actually find it difficult to work on a piece without some sort of accompanying audio, or even dialogue.

I currently use a graphics tablet and a drawing program on my computer to create my initial paintings and illustrations. In comparison to the hands-on methods I have used, I have found this to be the most useful and versatile skill I have developed during the course.

I will briefly describe the themes included in the pieces created for my final degree show. They are collectively a manifestation of my love for music, musical artists, illustrative digital paintings and my fascination with the imagery of byzantine orthodox icons. The parallel I have drawn upon is how people interact with and appease religion and music as discrete forms of worship.

I have chosen to synthesise my ideas by replacing the saints you would normally find on traditional religious icons with famous and influential musicians who are themselves the subjects of tragedy and legend.

Wooden icons of saints were made in times of religious persecution and were created to be portable. They could easily become the center of a makeshift shrine, so people facing religious persecution could feel connected to their faith and pray wherever they were forced to go.  In a similar way, the portable audio device (mp3 player, walkman) fulfills a similar function. Personally, I can be anywhere and feel connected to what I love, coping with anything if I can privately listen to a piece of iconic music in my head.

I aim to progress my artistic education into a career in freelance illustration, supplying pieces that accompany books, music albums, magazine and newspaper articles.
