BA (Hons) Embroidery

Becky Smyllie

My work takes inspiration from observing people in everyday situations. Capturing the movement and detail in their faces, I create my expressive and abstract portraits.

I use these portraits to build up layered surfaces, which I explore in a range of materials.

Producing repeats by hand ultimately creates imperfections that are embraced to develop an ever-changing and unique texture throughout the drawing.

Through abstracting and layering my portraits, the drawing becomes open to interpretation from the viewer.
