BA (Hons) Architecture

Fiona Griffiths

The site is located on the boundary between the Northern Quarter and Piccadilly. The design blurs the boundary between the two areas through bringing elements of each area to the threshold and by opening up the gateway to the Northern Quarter through the form of the building. The scheme consists of a homeless shelter, a cinema, a cafe and a public living room, and provides a safe place for the different users whilst integrating rough sleepers with the public in order to lessen the stigmatism and stereotypes associated with being homeless. This is done through careful consideration of the way different user groups circulate through the building. The materiality of the building relates to that of the buildings in the city centre of Manchester.
