BA (Hons) Textile Design for Fashion
Frances Rainforth
I have a passion for bringing crochet to the attention of a younger generation and reinventing its image.
Using these concepts I have designed a range of printed fabrics that have been inspired by crochet doily patterns. Crochet doilies are often intricate in design and laborious in creation. I have taken each crochet stitch and replaced it with a geometric shape simplifying the design and allow me to push preconceived ideas of what crochet is aesthetically.
My designs have combined the traditional hand craft with technology. I used digital drawing to transform the fussy and old-fashioned doilies into crisp clean geometric prints that tie in inspirations from current fashions and expand in to future trends. While the stereotypical image of the crochet becomes abstract and distorted in my work, the values of the craft transcend this and are still apparent through the ideas of uniformity, time expenditure and dedication.
