BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design

Iga Maciejewska

Through my pieces, I aim to draw attention to issues almost forgotten by today’s society. Whilst these may be uncomfortable to hear, the stories are rich in history, and are full of relevance and nostalgia.

Working with glass has helped me to develop a style, which creates this nostalgic feel and emphasises fragility of an individual and strength of a mass.

Being moved by the working and living conditions of Quarry Bank Mill workers during the Industrial Revolution, I created a piece that reflects upon tragic events and lack of individuality. Stories I have chosen to communicate come from Mill Memoranda’s accidents records and highlight specific incidents that happened to people.

I have taken inspiration from the loom and particularly the heddles to represent masses of workforce, and by including different objects inside the tubes, I aim to emphasise the fact every individual was special and unique even though for the employer they were disposable part of the machinery.
