BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design

Rebekah Anstess Binning

I am an artist in glass and small scale metal. Nature influences my work, fascinated by the changes in colour and form as the season’s change, I try to emulate this, constantly striving to encompass new processes and techniques.

I began glass blowing in 2009 and found it to be a musical medium that allowed me to play with light, colour, texture and form, as my interest evolved I began to combine silver and gold with small-scale glass to create miniature wearable sculptures.

Currently my work is focussed on playing with metals transforming the surface textures to create narrative jewellery around my theme of death. I have developed an interest in the cultural, religious, historical and social aspects of the grieving process. Through personal experience and research I have come to believe that the grieving process has been somewhat thwarted in today’s society:  a relatively recent occurrence and one that I feel is harmful to every affected individual. This lack of process has slowly evolved, causing death to become a taboo subject creating a social feeling of needing to suppressing grief. I have endeavoured to create confrontational contemporary mourning Jewellery that highlights the grieving process.
