Middlewood Basin is a 23 acre brownfield site conveniently located between Manchester and Salford. The aim of this project is to create a mini-high-street within the existing brick arches of two victorian town viaducts that functions as a modern-day centre for commercial activities and as a community and entertainment hub. A multifunctional public green space has also been developed in these secluded surroundings. This project aims to unlock the potential of otherwise redundant historic structures and to give them a new lease of life by actively integrating them into the 21st century. It is an example of what could be achieved with many other arches in the City of Manchester and how this in turn could help to prevent the homogenisation of our built environment.
