My work is concerned with exploring the subconscious state of mind through painting with a clear and free mind set as, to embark on it fully consciously and concentrated doesn’t allow there to be a full sense of clarity through free association. This interest stems from not understanding my identity fully because, I’m from two different backgrounds there isn’t one distinct one I belong to. Therefore, in trying to understand a part of myself that isn’t so exterior I have been able to engage with it on various levels that have allowed me to articulate snapshots of my subconscious self, a real self.
Using the ladder within my work has been profoundly important in further emphasising how I see my subconscious because, it’s important that I’m not just seeing my subconscious from one point, but from various points so the ladder represents these different levels.
“a psyche automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express – verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner – the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern” (Breton: 1924: 14, 26p).
