Emily James
I am interested in paint as a medium and how the mechanics of paint and its physical reality can be explored. Fundamentally, my work is informed by tradition, utilizing historical precedents. However, within my practice I want to investigate the possibilities of mystery and ambiguity, evident in the relationship between figuration and abstraction. I identify areas of interest from pre-existing artworks and this allows the paintings I create to become hazy and cryptic. My work can be perceived as transcriptions but also a new creation, something that you can relate to without the imagery being obvious.
