The Cottonopolis House of Fashion proposes a new cultural centre, in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter, dedicated to the celebration of British fashion. The design seeks to translate clothing into an architectural expression, presenting internal massing as a 'sculptural body' dressed with a textile-esque brick facade. Just as clothing can restrain the human body as well as flow loosely off of it, internal space within the museum constrains and retracts around the user forming a series of tight and open spaces. Moving through these contrasting spaces as a sequence fosters the idea of a journey through the sense of anticipation and experience of dynamic surroundings.
