Liusaidh Mclaughlin-Watt

Liusaidh is a visual artist motivated by the experiment of photography. Using a range of media types including print, video, and 3D work, she not only creates a body of work but investigates oneself. Self-exploration is a prevalent theme within her work, channelling into different subjects and imagery. Her practice consists of self-portraiture and landscapes, often marrying the two creating a co-dependent relationship between the figure and the environment. The work featured in the show stems from her project Dore Holm in which she studied the connection she has to a landscape by returning home to the Shetland Islands, which she left 15 years ago, creating a series which included strong performative elements. Dore Holm explores identity, heritage, folklore, perception and the emotional response of returning to a place that had become a memory. The project's namesake is the small islet off the shores of Eshaness, shown in the animated image, Dore Holm derives from the Scandinavian words meaning "Doorway" and "Small Island". This definition encapsulates the motivation Liusaidh had for this project, to provide a portal to view the islands she calls home.
