Janet Connett - MA/MSc Textiles
Telling Tales
Jan Connett is a textile artist and researcher. She has a particular interest in the subversive textiles stitched by women patients in c19th 'lunatic asylums' and in the ways we use textile-making today to support our mental health. For this exhibition, Jan presents works informed by archival and qualitative research and critical-making to explore the notion that women's lives and memories are embodied, barely-noticed, in domestic textiles. She aims to give voice to those unheard stories.
Taking found household cloths, she combines traditional print, dye and stitch techniques with moving images to produce complex layered narratives. Pin-bright memories fractured by interruptions, fading away with time.
