Marnie Gonzalez Warren - BA (Hons) Fine Art and Art History
Marnie González Warren is an art historian and oil painter specialising in figuration. Her playful paintings reflect her experience of culture as she lives it. Her approach also offers a commentary on the consumption and construction of femininity resulting from pervasive consumerist tendencies, questioning these assumptions while seemingly playing along with the narrative. Reflecting on the notion of spectacle within society, Gonzalez Warren explores ideas of femininity within media culture, intimacy, and love. Her interest in the traditional medium lies in its historical value and eternal quality, as a worshipful and time-consuming practice that creates a space that consolidates memory whilst encouraging its reflection.
Central to her practice is the use of cropping, as a tool that brings attention to details that shape her narrative and reconstruction of memory, treated with tenderness. Her paintings reflect a fascination with the marriage of contrasting elements that come together in expressive paintings that are informed by art history. She draws inspiration from the emotive expression of Spanish Art History, its rich colour palettes, and the intimate character of confessional artists such as Tracey Emin.
