SERENDIPITY / HAPPY SURPRISES: A STUDY ON THE POTENTIAL OF RANDOMISATION AND DESTRUCTION ON CREATIVITY IN SOUND DESIGN
SHORT BIO:
I'm freelance composer and sound designer based in Manchester, where for the past 10 years, I have grown a personal professional brand under the name Fractures. With a true passion for all things sound-related, I am always looking for challenging and exciting new projects within the creative arts.
PROJECT:
This body of work explored the question, ‘Can manufactured/authored/cultured randomisation, chance and destruction have a similar enhancing effect on the creative process as unauthored, spontaneous chance and destruction?’
Through this exploration, a ruleset ‘Essence’, was developed, dictating the fundamental elements of a piece, with emphasis on a connection between source material and imagery. The rule set has been designed to be transferrable to alternative disciplines in the creative arts.
Experiment 1. Video: 'MA SHOW 2024 Experiment 1 Audio + Project Information'
Chance/randomisation was used to dictate the sounds selected, sequence, note length, and gradual removal of sounds, resulting in a piece that is slowly dismantled.
Experiment 2. Video: '20th Century Icons #1'
Two voicemail recordings fragmented into sentences. Fragments are sequenced using block shades from pixelated images which are thematically connected to the recordings.
Experiment 3. Video: 'Tea Hive Café'
Triptych incorporating a real-world environment. Data from three pixelated images sequence outdoor, indoor and voice recordings from a local café.
