Sarah Grant

Sarah Grant - MFA Painting

Sarah Grant's work explores the potential for painting to hold psychological space, by drawing on objects of memory or charged association. The gestures are fleeting moments, cropped details from polaroid photographs or found imagery which convey a sense of temporality. She is fascinated by questions of perception and reality, informed by her meditation practice over 20 years and her work as an art therapist.  The work explores the tension between kitsch and commercial naff-ness, and that of painterly warmth and a sensitivity to surface quality. She is fascinated by investing overtly sentimental objects with a quiet observed energy, without falling into cynicism.

Sarah Grant is originally from Leeds and graduated in Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art in 2000. Since then she has exhibited regularly as a member of Glasgow Independent Studios, Trongate 103 Arts Centre. Her paintings are small in scale and she creates work in series which form part of a bigger narrative. She is currently studying on the two year MFA programme in Painting at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has returned to live in the North of England after spending twenty years working as an artist and art therapist in Glasgow.

Sarah co-facilitates a painters monthly discussion group in Manchester called Reading/Painting. She is also guest curator at the FG Gallery in Cheshire which exhibits contemporary painting from the North West.
