Abbey Littlejohns - BA (Hons) Textiles in Practice
My artistic stitch-work is fundamentally informed by my curiosity for the uniqueness found in abstraction, texture, and the emotive power of colour. Drawn to the freedom and fluidity of both natural and abstract subjects, I have developed a distinctive mark-making style that carries an organic, intuitive energy.
Recently, I’ve been particularly inspired by the textures of foliage and flora. Sketching and drawing are key parts of my creative development, always using stimulating visual imagery to explore composition and colour.
Guided by principles of colour theory, I carefully select threads that might stimulate and satisfy the eye, aiming to promote a happiness and atmosphere.
I work instinctively, allowing each piece to evolve in response to the surfaces and materials I explore. As I actively draw and sew, I’m equally influenced by my own thoughts, feelings, and emotions on the day, as well as the people and energy around me. This internal landscape shapes the rhythm, palette, and movement of my work, allowing each piece to capture a moment in time both externally and emotionally.
I am endlessly fascinated by the boundary-less materiality of fabric — how it shifts, holds, and responds my stitch. These studies contribute to work that is both aesthetically rich and visually compelling.
