Amelie Smyth - BA (Hons) Textiles in Practice

Fragile Earth

As a mixed-media textile artist, I am deeply committed to sustainability, craftsmanship, and storytelling through fabric. My work explores the interplay of texture and pattern, creating tactile artworks that invite touch. Every piece expresses my dedication to using only natural or recycled materials, ensuring that my artistic practice remains ethical and environmentally responsible.

Inspired by the world around me, my work subtly conveys important messages about climate change through indirect imagery. Rather than explicit representation, I use layered textures, organic forms, and intricate embroidery to evoke a sense of nature’s fragility. By blending traditional printmaking and embroidery techniques with contemporary design, I create pieces that encourage a deeper connection to our environment and its preservation.

Designed with high-end interior spaces in mind, my textiles bring an element of craftsmanship and storytelling into luxury settings. The rich textures, vibrant colour palettes, and detailing allow my pieces to seamlessly integrate into elegant interiors while carrying an important ecological message.

By embracing slow, mindful techniques and working exclusively with sustainable materials, I hope to challenge the throwaway culture of modern textiles and celebrate the beauty of longevity in art. My work serves as both a visual and tactile experience—one that encourages reflection on our relationship with nature and the impact of our choices on the world around us.
