Anya Seales - BA (Hons) Illustration with Animation

I am both an illustrator and animator. My preferred method of working includes traditional hand drawn animation. I also create digital illustrations using fine liners and like to work within a black and white colour scheme, occasionally incorporating spot colours where necessary. While my work doesn’t follow a specific theme, I enjoy creating spot illustrations and short animations that feature around characters. My work often includes a playful element.

For my main authorship project, I created seven 3D illustrated panel backgrounds with an animated story projected over the top. The animation is based on a selection of Aesop’s Fables, specifically from the book ‘The Fables of Aesop and others’ found in the Special Collections Museum. I wanted to spotlight that these collections and archives are available and bring them closer to students and the public for their interest and enjoyment. This enabled me to showcase another part of the University which isn’t currently as accessible due to the library being closed. The short stories follow a fox whilst he makes his way through each panel interacting with the other characters along the way. The illustrations are digitally hand drawn, printed and mounted onto laser cut MDF backings. These are then built forward with foam blocks to create the 3D effect. The animation was made using the traditional hand drawn animation process. This piece of work was created as a commision for the Vertical Gallary and is located within the Lowry Cafe.

The concept of this piece of work focuses on how we view moving images, specifically within a gallery setting. I wanted to create an immersive animation which viewers can catch snippets of whilst passing through the gallery.
