Dana Potter - BA (Hons) Drama and Contemporary Performance
Hi I'm Dana, a theatre maker, performer and writer.
During my time at university I have been able to explore different means of performance and over the past year I began to develop my professional identity. Exploring contemporary theatre and movement, aswell as autobiographical theatre, my identity has a huge influence on my work. As an artist I aim to create work that inspires and represents those who relate my experiences.
My installation titled 'the rain' is my first professional output and highlights the work I intend to create. This installation is a part of my current theatre practice, exploring themes such as intersectionality, colonialism, migration, and community. Drawing from my own experiences as a black woman, I created a metaphor to express how it can feel to exist in current society when faced with oppression.
'Careful: Wet Floor' is a performance I co-created with artists Stella Seki Smith and Elena Povazanec. It follow themes of migration, colonialism and community. Using water as a metaphor for the feeling of belonging. We framed it as 'a poem for the other' using poetry alongside movement, and drawing from our own experiences, we wanted to create something for those who relate to us. 'Careful: Wet Floor' links to my installation as a continuation of the themes displayed, using water to convey the feeling of oppression.
My artistic style is mainly movement based, having a dance background, I love using movement as a way of self expression. I love creating strong visuals with still image or movement, allowing the auidence to interpret its meaning. I have also recently began to share my poetry, finding ways to incorporate it into my work.
I hope to continue collaborating with other artists to create theatre that speaks to those who need it. Theatre that highlights and uplifts.
