To Sketch the Space Between
My artistic practice is rooted in an ongoing exploration of the intersection between photography and writing, using both to visualise in different ways. I often uses other mixed media approaches in my work, such as textile pieces and hand drawn art. My subjects fluctuates, as I enjoys many sectors within photography - such as fashion, portraiture and still life. Although my subject changes, I always have a physical output, whether that be a handmade photobook or installation piece.
My current project, To Sketch the Space Between, merges image and text - drawing inspiration from the act of dreaming. Dreams often unfold in fragments, guided by a strange, internal logic. They’re vivid and intimate - remaining locked within the dreamer’s mind. Through conversations, I interpret these dreamt moments, creating my own visual and written responses to what others describe.
Embedded in the work is dialogue between interpretation and imagination - the photograph as one version of a story, and the text as another. There is an interplay between the photos I create, and the ones viewers form in their minds when reading the text. Each photograph is made using an analogue camera, but when and where I shoot is guided entirely by the dream being explored.
The project reflects a wider interest in how we communicate the intangible. It’s an attempt to sketch the spaces between memory, imagination, and perception - offering glimpses of imagined worlds that are usually kept private.
