Flow State
‘Flow State’ is a project that explores rave culture through an immersive experience and visual journey, capturing its energy, communal spirit, and the deep connection between people and sound. This multimedia piece documents the role of raves in youth culture, and how they ignite emotional release and foster social cohesion. The intention was to represent the power of rave culture: dancing for hours to repetitive beats with people you love, surrounded by a sea of strangers. The sheer amount of potential this environment holds - new friendships, future relationships, hearing new favourite songs, life-changing conversations, and unforgettable experiences.
One element of the project is the moving image projections, in which she use light flares and vibrant colour to depict the fluidity of crowd movement and the psychological effects of dancing. Alongside this, another element of the project delves into the cultural significance of rave flyers and their evolution. It reflects on the shift from ‘word of mouth’ and flyer-based promotion to social media, leading to the commercialisation of raving and the rise of overcrowded, oversold events. Faith created her own flyer designs for this display in paying homage to the original ‘acid house’ era of the late ’80s and early ’90s. These intimate environments, and the culture surrounding them, offer immeasurable value to both the individual and the collective.
