Viva Mulher
My design, Viva Mulher, is a career and education centre with onsite services and businesses that benefit marginalized women in urban Brazilian communities by creating access to skill-building, economic independence, and educational opportunities in a culture with notable gender inequality.
The site, a restored 1870s warehouse in the historic port district of Rio de Janeiro, was originally designed by an Afro-Brazilian engineer who broke the social norms of his era. Its long, high ceiling volumes, archways, and open concept plan now encourage participants and visitors to interact with one another.
Features include:
A Padaria (Bakery) with Market Space throughout
A Botanical Garden with an open-roof design to allow natural light and warmth
The Hub (Workshop and Guidance Area) where participants receive support
An Interactive Childcare Centre to ease the responsibilities of mothers participating
The space is designed with a warm colour palette and sustainable materials, such as terracotta-toned stucco and naturally cooling terracotta stone, providing comfortable temperature regulation. Greenery throughout the project nods to Brazil’s lush environment. These materials create a comforting atmosphere for those pursuing their goals, mirroring the intended purpose of growth and advancement within a supportive setting.
By establishing Viva Mulher with a bold mission to challenge entrenched norms, the project seeks to inspire a more equitable standard for the future.
