The Anemone - Exploring Film Prop Design
As a Designer and Illustrator, I find most of my inspiration comes from nature as well as vintage and maximalist aesthetics. For this project I wanted to explore this fascination while combining it with a narrative. So, I decided to come up with a fake film to design props for. My basis for the film was from the poem "Room with a View" By Stephen Swinburne, an innocent children's poem about sea anemone where it references eating tenants. I chose to spin it on its head and create a surreal and camp film about a charming hotel owner who is in fact a cannibal, set in the fictional seaside town "Hexmouth".
I sometimes like to incorporate humour in my designs and make things that are more on the playful side. Using bright colours are my bread and butter but I drew particular hues as a nod to sea anemone and coral, as well as seaside aesthetics from Blackpool to Cornwall.
I like to try and bridge the gap between what is "tacky" and "tasteful". As well as reimaging and bringing back to life design elements from the past which have since been forgotten.
