Julian Gray - MA Illustration
Julian Gray is an illustrator, comic book creator, and visual arts educator based in Manchester, UK.
Unapologetically queer, trans, disabled, and mixed heritage (Hong Kong/English), Julian is passionate about filling the world with stories featuring marginalised characters where their marginalisation is not the centrepiece. He is especially fond of flawed characters and LGBTQ+ romances. His illustrations are character-driven and take inspiration from his favourites: superhero comics, speculative fiction, the Victorian aristocracy and historical gothic aesthetics.
He has worked with prestigious clients such as the BBC, LGBT Foundation, Barnardo's, DaDaFest, and the University of Liverpool, making illustrations, running workshops, and creating graphic novels within the Graphic Medicine field. His first solo exhibition, 'Stories For Us', ran at the Lowry from March to May 2022 and introduced his comic work to a broader audience.
He has recently completed an MA in Illustration with the aim to move into a HE/FE teaching career alongside his freelance work.
In his spare time, he enjoys tabletop RPGs and acting classes.
Julian is a member of a-n, the Association of Comic Creators, and the Horizons Collective. He also works as a Freelance Artist Development Facilitator for Outside In.
