Inherited Self
Working primarily in oil on MDF board, Liv Jeffery examines the raw and shifting terrain of grief and identity. Her paintings are rooted in personal experience — specifically, the loss of her stepfather — and serve as a means to process mourning not just as an emotional response, but as a quiet, often mundane, and ultimately transformative force.
Influenced by the urgency and emotional depth of Expressionism, Liv’s work captures the fragmentation that grief can bring: a disconnection from place, from self, and from the innocence of childhood. The act of painting becomes a way to reclaim that fractured self, to sit with discomfort, and to give form to what often remains unspoken.
There is also strength in these works — found in everyday gestures and in the recurring presence of her mother, a stabilising figure throughout the process of loss. While deeply personal, Liv’s paintings gesture toward shared experience. They do not offer resolution; instead, they hold space for ambiguity, inviting viewers to find quiet echoes of their own stories within them.
Through bold marks, restrained palettes, and charged surfaces, Liv opens up an intimate dialogue with memory, vulnerability, and resilience.
