ALLL EYES ON YOU

Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched?

Within my final collection I mainly explored the idea of surveillance and control. This has many different meanings that are open to interpretation, but to me it portrays the feeling of constantly being watched and perceived by others, wether you are aware of it or not. This stems from insecurities of constantly being looked at throughout my life as someone who grew up in a small village and dresses alternative, combined with the rising use of surveillance methods everywhere - be it security cameras, data farming or even the use of social media.

I aimed to use garment details that help to hide your identity such as high collars, hoods and sunglasses as accessories. I combined these features with clubwear elements such as tight-fitting and revealing silhouettes. Hide your identity but not your true personal style.

Taking inspiration from alternative subcultures, mainly the 90s cyber goth wave, I created this collection by fusing elements from my own personal style with a futuristic dystopian twist to create this monochrome set of garments. I have always loved using heavy hardware elements within my work, elevating the surface design in order to achieve a maximalist appearance without the use of any colour.

The main technique I used within this collection is laser cutting. I cut hundreds of pieces of black acrylic and sewed them together to create this chainmail-like armoured structure that I sewed in panels onto my garments. I also used mirrored acrylic as the only non-black element to reflect back on the watcher, making you realise how unpleasant it feels to be observed, reflecting your gaze away from the garment and back onto yourself.
