Madison Sprague - BA (Hons) Fine Art
Madison Spragues' sculptural practice creates a dialogue between material and body, interior and exterior, drawing on lived experiences of her body’s failure. Through embodied processes that incorporate breath and physicality, she navigates the tension between the body’s fragility and its capacity for beauty. Suspended between a delicate balance of containment and vulnerability, glass becomes a vessel for emotional and physical tension, externalising intimate interiors and giving form to the unseen. The aesthetic and bodily qualities of blown glass seduce the viewer with an inaccessible allure, tainted by suggestions of the abject. The act of looking is integral; the fragility of glass dictates movement, its presence demanding distance, slowing the process of perception, and transforming the gaze into a form of touch. Light and shadow give life to the work; their shifting relationship activates the form, casting shadows that become extensions of the body. Holding the weight of both the abject and the ethereal, the seen and the concealed, she invites the viewer into a liminal space where body and material dissolve into one another.
