URBAN VORTEX - ACCRA
My design philosophy is rooted in storytelling and cultural expression. To me, design is a bridge between heritage and innovation, allowing me to reinterpret traditional aesthetics in contemporary ways. My definition of fashion goes beyond clothing, I see it as a medium for self-expression and cultural dialogue, infusing my heritage and culture into every project. I draw inspiration from where I grew up, Accra. My city is rich in abstract forms, graffities, vibrant colours, coastal beauty, and historical significance.
At the core of my concept is the annual “Chale Wote” street art festival in Accra which transforms the city into a living canvas, filled with vibrant graffiti, murals, dance, and performance. I was particularly drawn to the colours, movement, and spontaneity of the festival, which informed the visual direction of my collection. I conducted print research by photographing local street murals and graffiti, developing prints through digital printing and screen printing techniques, and enhancing selected areas with hand painting for a more tactile, expressive finish.
My collection is both a personal reflection and a cultural exploration. It allowed me to re-engage with my roots through design, using fashion as a tool to highlight the layered narratives that define contemporary African identity. This project not only deepened my understanding of storytelling through textiles but also helped me solidify my voice as a designer influenced by heritage, place, and experimentation.
A unique structural element in my collection was inspired by Accra’s architecture, specifically the local roofing systems. I translated the lines and layering of corrugated rooftops into fabric using the pin tuck techniques, adding subtle depth and rhythm to the garments. This allowed me to connect the built environment with the human body, using textiles as a medium to echo the city’s form.
