MA Fine Art

Sagnick Bhowmick (b. 2000, Kolkata, India) is a sculptor from Kolkata, India, working primarily with clay, metal, and mixed materials. He studied Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata, India before moving to the UK to pursue MA Fine Arts at Manchester School of Art. His practice explores identity, migration, and interconnectedness, often drawing on Hindu philosophy to reflect on cycles of balance, belonging, and the fragile ties that hold individuals and communities together.

For his MA Degree Show, he presents International Student (2025), an installation rooted in his lived experience of navigating education, financial struggle, and displacement while studying abroad. At the centre of the work is a sculptural brain, built from expanding foam and supported by a concealed rod rising from the ground. Designed to appear as if floating, the brain evokes both thought and survival under pressure. From it flow red cords, forming a spinal structure that stretches to the floor, where terracotta heads rest at the ends. The cords act as fragile yet vital lifelines, while the clay heads embody both individuality and collective struggle, representing the millions of international students who share parallel journeys of hope and hardship.

The installation speaks to resilience amid uncertainty — how one survives while adapting to an unfamiliar environment, holding onto memory and identity in the face of challenge.

Across his wider practice, he works with materials such as terracotta, metal, and plaster, integrating traditional sculptural processes with contemporary concerns. His sculptures invite viewers to reflect on how personal stories are inseparably woven into the wider human fabric, shaped by choice, migration, and the search for belonging.
