Sam Varty - BA (Hons) Filmmaking
I’ve been passionate about post-production—particularly editing—since sixth form, and that interest has grown through both academic and personal projects. My work includes two third-year final films and a passion project editing a music video for UK rapper Jordy, inspired by the GRM Daily Duppy style.
In The Fisherman, my main focus was on colour grading. I used contrasting blues and yellows to reflect the inner thoughts and emotional journey of the protagonist, Arthur. The editing supports and enhances the narrative arc, guiding the viewer through his mental state. In Break-Out, the strength lies in my sound design. With no dialogue to drive the story of Bruce confronting his agoraphobia, I relied on music, ambience, and carefully placed sound bites to convey his emotions and transformation.
My GRM Daily Duppy-style edit was my first major project created solely in After Effects. I undertook it as a way to improve my animation and transition techniques, pushing myself to explore more dynamic and stylised editing. It sparked a real interest in keyframing and motion graphics, an area I’m keen to develop further after university.
I’m driven by how post-production brings together visual storytelling, emotion, and rhythm. Whether it’s through colour, sound, or movement, I’m always looking to create edits that resonate and elevate the story being told.
