Sioned Riffel - BA (Hons) Graphic Design

BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Hello! My name is Sioned, I am originally from Wrexham, North Wales, however I plan to remain in Manchester, where I’ll be based as I enter the design industry upon finishing my time as a student on BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Manchester School of Art.

I am an aspiring Art Director with an interest in print design, illustration, photography, music, journalism, and film, confronting the theme of identity and culture through these creative mediums.

Beginning my art and design education with an interest in Fine Art and Photography, my passion has developed over the past three years and I have found a love for visual communication using a variety of processes, often combining these together to tell a story or create a narrative, as well as commenting on social and political issues within my work where relevant.

The course has encouraged me to use unconventional materials and experiment with processes that I began my time at university completely alien to. I've really found my feet with motion after being exposed to industry-standard software including Adobe: After Effects and Premiere Pro through engaging with a series of optional workshops offered on the course. I’ve come to realise that you can be an analogue-based designer and still embrace motion and digital processes, something I discovered while producing a stop-motion animation comprising 160 cyanotype images, entitled ‘My Mother’s Blues’. This, amongst other pieces, has been exhibited externally, which was an invaluable opportunity.

I’ve also found real joy in the research-led side of the creative process, most notably through the opportunity to interview those within A24’s trailblazing art department, as part of my Design Contexts 3 project. These experiences have deepened my understanding of visual storytelling and continue to inspire the direction of my work exploring the intersection between film and design.
