Theo Stephenson - BA (Hons) Filmmaking

Cambridgeshire

I am a filmmaker and editor interested in how storytelling can reveal the internal—our habits, hesitations, and emotional blind spots. My work often explores themes of addiction, identity, and routine, using rhythm, silence, and texture to build emotional resonance. I’m drawn to stories that live in the grey areas—where characters are flawed, vulnerable, and human.

Working primarily in short form, I’ve developed a practice built with collaboration, instinct, and experimentation. I studied BA (Hons) Filmmaking at Manchester Metropolitan University, where I focused on post-production and sound. I see editing not just as a technical process but as a narrative tool—shaping time, tone, and subjectivity to bring deeper layers to the screen. I’ve also worked across multiple roles on set, which has given me a holistic understanding of the filmmaking process.

My recent short film Two Blind Mice, I crafted a slower, more atmospheric edit, focusing on subtle visual cues and negative space to tell a story of emotional distance. For my previous film, Payline explores the pull of gambling addiction and targeted advertising. It pushed me to develop a visual language grounded in repetition and unease.

As an artist, I’m inspired by the psychological tension of Xavier Legrand, the structure of Roland Barthes’ narrative codes, and the grounded realism of Lynne Ramsay. I want my work to ask questions, create space for thought, and connect with people in ways that linger.

I am always seeking new collaborations and opportunities to develop projects that challenge, surprise, and feel personal.
