Victoria Ford - BA (Hons) Fashion

I am primarily a womenswear designer though I do not limit myself to this, whilst exploring fashion design. I specialise in print and knitwear whilst using my pattern cutting skills to create interesting shapes. I enjoy having the ability to transform an idea into a garment that moves and is interesting to the eye.

In my final year, my collection was inspired by my interest in workwear and the inside of my family garage at home. I combined this with research into women welders from WWII to grow my garment research. I wanted to create a juxtaposition of workwear details with feminine elements. This lead me to looking into 1960s swimwear research to bring a different style and shape to my collection altogether. My concept was the starting point to creating a strong powerful womenswear collection.

Through research, gathering fabrics and lots of sample experimentation I created my four look collection. The base and main fabric was a 14oz dead stock denim. I printed upon this and took it through a process of distressing and washing to achieve the worn fee. Using an image of a knitted sample, I applied this print and after further fabric distress, placed this upon wide knitted pieces. This created a 3D style fabric which would look different however it would be worn. I definitely feel the prints I created, are unique and an extension of myself through love of colour and maximalism.

Throughout my final project I very much enjoyed being  experimental with my specialisms and translating this into my collection. It is exciting to see how the boundaries of fashion can be pushed. I always aim to continue with the idea of experimenting within my work, creating fun, colourful and exciting pieces.
