The Nest

I am from Taiwan, with several years of experience in interior design practice, and I am currently studying for a Master’s degree in Interior Design at Manchester Metropolitan University, soon to be completed. For me, design is not only about planning spaces or achieving aesthetics — it is about creating places where people feel safe, comfortable, and connected. Through my work, I hope to bring warmth and inspiration into everyday life.

This idea is at the heart of The Nest, a project that reimagines Hatters Hostel in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The Northern Quarter is full of art and energy, but I noticed that older visitors sometimes feel left out because of generational and financial barriers. The Nest aims to change that by creating a welcoming, temporary home where older travellers can experience the creativity of the neighbourhood.

Inspired by the Chinese character “å·¢” (nest), the design symbolises protection, vitality, and togetherness. More than just a hostel, it’s imagined as a place where generations meet, share stories, and find belonging. My hope is that through small but thoughtful gestures in design, The Nest can turn indifference into connection, and help people rediscover joy in everyday life.
