The Common Lane

''THE COMMON LANE''

What if the street continued indoors?

The Common Lane reimagines the interior as an extension of the city—a dynamic social landscape where movement, exchange, and everyday encounters shape the experience of space. Inspired by urban theory and the vitality of public life, the project transforms the interior into an indoor urban environment that blurs the boundaries between architecture and the street.

The design creates a layered third-space ecosystem that integrates market activity, co-working, leisure, and social gathering within a flexible and adaptable interior landscape. Rather than prescribing a single use, the space supports a spectrum of activities, allowing people to work, rest, meet, observe, and participate on their own terms. The project prioritises wellbeing, inclusivity, and accessibility by offering a low-pressure civic environment that does not rely on consumption or obligation to foster belonging.

Drawing on Jane Jacobs’ concept of “eyes on the street,” The Common Lane translates the social dynamics of urban public space into an interior setting through interconnected routes, visual permeability, and overlapping programmes. These spatial strategies encourage movement, passive interaction, and repeated encounters, cultivating a sense of safety, community, and social cohesion.

Accessible, flexible, and socially neutral, The Common Lane provides a contemporary civic environment where everyday interaction becomes the foundation for connection, inclusion, and collective urban life.

ABOUT ME

I am a final-year Interior Design student at Manchester Metropolitan University with a passion for creating functional, user-focused spaces that make a positive impact. I have developed strong skills in 3D modelling, rendering, and photo editing, applying them across a range of design projects.

My experience as a Course Representative has strengthened my communication and organisational abilities, and I am eager to collaborate within a professional design and build environment to further develop my skills.
