Distorted Order

I am a surface pattern designer, specialising in woven textiles. My creative practice explores the interaction of bold colour, pattern, texture, and materiality. I translate these qualities into handwoven samples, creating playful and tactile outcomes. I am particularly interested in challenging traditional woven construction by disrupting repetition to create fragmented and visually dynamic surfaces. This is achieved through experimentation with colour, material, and structural interruption.

I approach my sampling with a graphic and illustrative mindset, where drawing and collage play an integral role in developing and reinterpreting imagery. This process informs my woven practice, encouraging me to investigate and challenge colour, structure, pattern, and material possibilities. While weaving remains central to my work, I maintain a strong interest in broader design disciplines and am always keen to explore these further.

My final project, 'Distorted Order' is inspired by architectural blocks observed during my travels, alongside the collaged mosaics of Antoni Gaudí. The project explores the tension between the structured order of weaving and disrupted imagery. Precise linear blocks and stripes are juxtaposed with irregular organic motifs to create layered and expressive woven outcomes. I am interested in how geometric forms can be fragmented and reconstructed, shifting between structure and abstraction.

Through bold colour blocking and layered geometry, I create woven samples that balance repetition and control with intuition, resulting in dynamic outcomes. 'Distorted Order' investigates how architectural influence, collage, and graphic composition can be translated into distinctive woven surfaces.
