SHE WEARS THE TROUSERS (And The Slip)

My practice is rooted in disrupting binaries between masculine and feminine. I take a lot of inspiration from streetwear, vintage and military references, allowing me to reinterpret functionality through a genderless lens. From this I create fluid and functional designs that adapt to the wearer and challenge traditional ideas around identity. My work explores tension and balance, portrayed through contrasting heavy materials such as denim and leather with lightweight fabrics, as well as contrasting fluid and sculptural silhouettes. I think sustainability is always important in design as I am more interested in making pieces that feel intentional rather than mass produced. She Wears The Trousers (And The Slip) is a project derived from the cross between masculine lesbian dress and sultry feminine dress with influences from R&B styling and workwear. The project explores tension and balance portrayed through contrasting heavy materials such as denim with lightweight fabrics like latex, as well as contrasting concealing vs revealing silhouettes. The boundaries of gender are explored through fluid and functional designs that adapt to the wearer and challenge traditional ideas around identity. With a heavy focus on lesbian identity I wanted to disrupt the binaries between masculine and feminine, creating collection that embodies empowerment and visibility.
