Textures of Transience
Textures of Transience explores the overlooked textures and patterns found within transient spaces, focusing on the hallway of my own home. As a space I move through every day, the hallway had become something I rarely paid attention to. This project encouraged me to slow down and look more closely, revealing a collection of textures and patterns that had always been there but often went unnoticed.
The project is rooted in my personal connection to this space. The hallway acts as a transitional area between rooms, a place of constant movement that is not considered a destination itself. By focusing on the details within this everyday environment, I became interested in how familiar spaces can hold unexpected beauty when viewed from a different perspective.
The colour palette for Textures of Transience was inspired by my exploration of relief prints and photography. Through relief printing, I became interested in the contrast between bold shapes and textures surfaces, while photography allowed me to observe subtle colour variations within the hallway's materials and lighting. Combining these influences helped shape a palette that reflects the textures and atmosphere of the space, reinforcing the connection between observation and place.
Using photographs of found textures from the hallway, I extracted and developed patterns which were then projected back into the space through an immersive installation. Laser cut Perspex and plywood circles were used to create layers of projected light and shadow, transforming the hallway and drawing attention to details that are usually overlooked.
