Within Memory, Landscape and Metal
'Within Memory, Landscape and Metal' is a body of work that explores my family's connection with place. Each metal object I create holds personal significance, rooted in memories, discoveries and observations made in and around a village in the Spanish Pyrenees. Arrés has inspired me since childhood and continues to shape my identity and artistic practice. My passion for nature and birdwatching began there through experiencing such a unique landscape. Through working with metal, I make these connections tangible, transforming my experiences into wearable and sculptural forms to share with others. My process often begins on a walk, where I collect and closely study organic objects, or through drawings made directly from observation in the landscape. I then translate these forms into metal using the traditional technique of chasing and repoussé. By hammering sheet metal with steel punches, raised surfaces are created that echo the forms, rhythms, and details of the environment that continues to inspire me.
Alongside this, as part of the Art School Commission, I have collaborated with multidisciplinary designer Lily Truelove to create a body of work titled Bal, meaning Mine in Kernewek. Presented in the Holden Gallery, the collection of metal objects and the publication explore an alternative narrative of Cornwall, highlighting its rich cultural identity. I used tin sourced from Cornwall and melted it into forms that celebrate the Cornish landscape whilst directly connecting to its mining industry. While the textured copper pieces are inspired by mining processes, folktales and coastal plants growing on the unique dry-stone walls known as Cornish hedges.
