The Princess of 72nd Street

The Princess of 72nd Street by Elaine Kraf explores the world of main character Ellen who transforms into Princess Esmerelda during her ‘radiances’. She is caught in a world of delusion, fantasy and pure ecstasy where no pain can be felt. This often lands Princess Esmerelda waking up in the bedrooms of unknown strangers, sometimes covered in bruises, arrested or forced into a mental institution. Ultimately, the book and my project, centres around a woman’s autonomy and the freedom of expressing happiness without the boundaries of social acceptability. The collection aims to embody the duality between Ellen and Princess Esmerelda.
